Rachel Spencer is trumpet player residing in Austin, Texas and will be joining the Cadets as a High Brass Technician. She earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from Capital University and a Master of Music in Music and Human Learning from the University of Texas at Austin. During her time at UT, she served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the University Bands which included teaching Longhorn Band, Longhorn Pep Band, and directing the Longhorn Jazz Ensemble. As a performer, Ms. Spencer has shared the stage with many incredible musicians such as Bill Watrous, Sean Jones, Grace Kelly, the Austin Symphony and more. During graduate school, she was a member of the UT Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, New Music Ensemble, as well as a National Trumpet Competition Semifinalist in the Graduate Solo Division for the year 2018.
Rachel spent five years performing with the Bluecoats from 2013-2017 as a lead player, soloist, and horn sergeant. During her tenure the Bluecoats won their first championship in 2016 as well as bronze and silver medals. As an instructor, she has worked on brass staff for the Madison Scouts, the Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets, and the Blue Stars prior to joining the Cadets.
Rachel is incredibly passionate about Jazz Education: She serves as the Education and Outreach Coordinator for Jazz Girls Texas and joined the faculty for the Longhorn Music Camp and Texas Jazz and Blues Camp. She is a frequent master class clinician as well, teaching brass pedagogy, improvisation, and jazz ensemble instruction. Currently, Rachel is an Assistant Band Director at Dahlstrom Middle School and frequently performs often in and around Austin.
