Wilker, born in João Pessoa/Brazil, began his musical life playing in marching bands in the state of Paraíba. Soon after his start he was sent to UFPB (Federal University of Paraiba) to take music lessons and finished his Bachelor of Music in French horn Performance receiving the prestigious Laurel of Academic Excellence.
Wilker has performed and studied in national and international music festivals as a French horn player and also as a Conductor with many teachers from Brazil and around the world including: Sandoval Moreno (Brazil), Stanley F. Michalski, John Grant, Albert Nguyen and Carl Collin (USA) and John Robert Marr (Australia), also has participated as a teacher in conducting classes for symphonic bands and marching bands. He has worked since 2001 as a Conductor and Music Director of several marching bands and musical groups, winning prestigious awards including; Best Band and Best Conductor. He has also studied orchestral conducting at Brazilian Music Festivals with the conductors Luiz Carlos Durier, Lanfranco Marcelletti, Rafael Palace Luz, Emilio Caesar, Marcos Arakaki and Isaac Karabtchevsky (Brazil), Maurice Perez, Cristopher Zimmerman (USA) and Catherin Larsen-Maguire (England) winning the award “Young Orchestra Conductor” in 2012 in competition during the International Music Festival Eleazar de Carvalho in Brazil. He conducted the Symphonic Band of Federal University of Paraíba, Youth Orchestra for the Federal University of Paraiba and Paraíba Youth Symphony Orchestra as a guest conductor.
Additionally, he was the French horn teacher at the Orquestra Criança Cidadã (Child Citizen Orchestra), Artist Director of the Social Project PRIMA and Tour assistant during the DCI tour with The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps.
In 2013, José Wilker came to the United States to participate in a Chamber Music Camp in Madeline Island as a musician and then in the Drum Corps International Championships World Class with The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps as a volunteer.
Wilker move to the United States in 2016 to do the Artist Certificate in French Horn Performance at the Azusa Pacific University with the renowned Professor James Thatcher where he works giving private French horn lessons and working as an Assistant Director at the Glendora High School Tartan Band and Pageantry and Music director of World Music Symphony Orchestra from Azusa Conservatory of Music.
Now he is currently a student of Master’s Degree of Music in Instrumental Conducting under the tutelage of Dr. John Burdett.
