Successful First USBands Leadership Workshop!

Last Saturday, April 29th, Youth Education in the Arts and USBands held their first Leadership Workshop for students in the New Jersey area. Hosted at Hopewell Valley Central High School, students had a chance to learn about what it means to be a leader, and also what they can do to help bring their program to the next level.

"So many time we see workshops for students once they have already been given a leadership role or it's during a time where they can't practice what they learned with their peers," said Program Coordinator Jon Swengler. "What we wanted to do was create something different, where it doesn't matter if you are a leader or a future leader, there is a place where you can learn the skills to help you better understand your band culture and the important role YOU will play in it's success."

Students that attended the session also had the opportunity to get a sneak peek at The Cadets' program for 2017. They also had the chance to speak with one of the current Cadets drum majors to learn about what it's like to lead a corps at the DCI level.

Check out what some of the students had to say about the Leadership Workshop!

  • "I always felt the need to help people toward happiness or success and today made me understand how much I want to be a leader." - Hailey
  • "I learned a lot of methods of dealing with troubling situations, methods to improve the band program and how to engage in extraordinary moments." - Jasper
  • "Today was great! I enjoyed learning how to communication and connect with any group I lead/am a part of. I found the Q/A session with Dalton, The Cadets Drum Major, very informative and interesting. I also enjoyed meeting other high school kids in similar positions to mine and exchanging stories." - Aditya

YEA! Education is working on offering even more opportunities for students to learn and grow. In addition to the leadership workshop, YEA! Education is excited to bring back the chance for students to work with The Cadets and staff during our Music is Cool program. This day-long clinic gives students the chance to play alongside the 10-time World Champions while receiving instruction and feedback from The Cadets staff. Afterwards, students get to participate in a special performance and attend a drum corps show that evening. To learn more about this clinic and register, click here
