Saturday night at the DCI Eastern Classic in Allentown, the Crossmen announced that longtime Cadets and Crossmen instructor, Michelle Owens, will be inducted into their 2017 Hall of Fame. Michelle lost her brave fight with cancer in 2016 and will be honored posthumously. She was a member of The Cadets staff from 2003-2008, including the 2005 championship year, and a member of the Crossmen staff from 1995-2000. Michelle marched with the Crossmen from 1990-1994. You can read more about her career in the marching arts here.
Earlier in the year, a tree was planted in the park across the street from J. Birney Crum as a way to remember Michelle's legacy. Michelle's Remembrance Tree was recently memorialized with a special plaque from Jeff Sacktig and her drum corps family and became a gathering places over the course of the weekend. Michelle's tree was visited by many, with people taking photos and leaving flowers and mementos, many with smiley faces painted on them. The Cadets' color guard stopped by to take a photo in honor of Michelle, as well as the Crossmen, Troopers, Carolina Crown and Bluecoats color guards. Smiles and memories filled the scene of remembrance for those who loved Michelle the most, and some from people who never met her at all but knew of the impact she had on the marching arts.
