The Cadets and George Hopkins, Corps Director, announced today that the vast majority of the design, leadership and educational staff will return in 2018. The staff returns in a group effort of continuity and growth, building off of what proved to be a positive and inspirational 2017. An excellent member return rate is expected, some exciting touring plans will be forthcoming soon, and it all begins November 11th and 12th with auditions at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
Hopkins said, "We have an addition or two to the design team, and the exact appointments of technical staff will be forthcoming but overall, we are thrilled to be returning most, if not all of the design and teaching team. For decades, The Cadets staff stayed intact from year to year, and with 2018, we look to continue the practice. It takes time to develop a team, it takes time for all to understand the culture of The Cadets and YEA! and with 2018, we clearly see a pathway ahead that allows for a unique approach to the world of drum corps performance, student growth, and overall excellence. We are thrilled with the results of 2017. Great kids, and a great team; now, we just need to ramp up the end results a bit."
The 2018 program is in the early days of discussion. There is an intention to continue the newly regenerated relationship with the Leonard Bernstein Office, but such is not the only alternative at this juncture. There are some other avenues to pursue, and much is still possible.
According to Hopkins, "Our preference is to stick to Bernstein, but, there are meetings scheduled in the coming days with the New York Philharmonic and the Bernstein Office. Following those discussions, we will be in a better place to make the best of decisions." Added in Drew Shanefield, Brass Arranger for the corps, "To be performing Bernstein on the occasion for his 100th birthday celebration would be fabulous but there is much to consider. Our meetings through September will solidify our approach, I am sure."
Hopkins has meetings with the New York Philharmonic and the Bernstein office over the coming weeks.
