After a Saturday evening of USBands shows across the Northeast, George Hopkins, the CEO of Youth Education in the Arts and Director of The Cadets, announced that Shane Gwaltney will be joining The Cadets as the Design Director for the corps.
Shane will be joining Tom Aungst, Drew Shanefield, Omar Carmenates, Kristy Templin, Joe Heininger, Bobby Jones, George Hopkins and Matt Filosa as The Cadets build upon the success of 2017 in a new and creative way.
In making the announcement, Hopkins said, “We have been looking to add a new vision, a different perspective, and someone from a different genre to assist the design process. We are very proud of what we accomplished last year, but after discussions, I think the entire team felt that Shane could being a level of organization and insight that would make us all better as sections and as a team."
For those unfamiliar, Shane was a charter member of Music City Mystique Indoor Percussion from 1995-99. He has been instrumental in the group for 23 years thus far as a member, Battery Arranger, Visual Designer and Program Coordinator. His innovative and trend setting musical and visual designs have become a mainstay in the WGI Indoor Percussion, BOA and the DCI arenas. Shane has arranged and worked with Southwind Drum and Bugle Corps, Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps, Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps, Music City Mystique, Bangkok Society Drumline, Tyler Junior College, Choctawhatchee High School, Ravenwood High School, along with several high school and independent indoor percussion programs across the country. His inspiration and motivation comes from the staff and kids from programs that allow him to be involved. He is also a proud artist and clinician for Innovative Percussion, Pearl Drums, Evans Drum Heads\Planet Waves and Zildjian Cymbals.
The Cadets also have raised Sam Watson to the position of Staff Coordinator. Sam will continue with the guard, as an associate of Kristy Templin, but in this new role, Sam will be assisting Hopkins and the office staff with arrangements coordination, flights, timing and all of the many many requirements necessitated in keeping a staff of The Cadets skill and size on the same page
Sam is a resident of Indianapolis, marched with The Cadets in 2009 earning a distinguishing "Rookie of the Year" award. He returned to teach the color guard from 2011 through 2017. Receiving "Staff Member of the Year" in 2015, along with the entire color guard staff, and again in 2016. This will be his eighth summer as a member of The Cadets Color Guard Staff.
Sam previously performed with the Pride of Cincinnati Winter Guard (2008-2013) and The Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps.
His teaching experience includes Carmel High School, IN (2013-present), Centerville High School, OH (2008-2011) and several summers as a color guard instructor for Fred J. Miller Summer Clinics.
