Heavy rain is forecast for New Jersey and the Northeast this Sunday.
After a few days of watching, a few days of calls, and an evening of strategizing and debate, USBands announces that the USBands Championships, (Class A – Groups 1-2-3) , previously set for October 29 at Rowan University, in Glassboro, NJ will now be held at Middletown High School South on Saturday, November 4.
The schedule for the day:
Group 3 A bands --- 12:00 p.m. start and 4:30 p.m. completion
Group 1 A and 2 A bands – 5:30 p.m. start (2A's followed by the 1A's starting at 8:06 pm) and 10:00 pm completion
Details will be posted at www.usbands.org and a more detailed schedule will be sent out later this evening)
In announcing the change, Jon Swengler, Associate Director of USBands said, “We looked at colleges and high schools, and we looked at weeknights and weekends. The challenge was that from a geographic standpoint, bands are located from the top of the state to the bottom, and everywhere in between. We had to look at travel times, other commitments and much more.” Jon continued, “We even talked to MetLife but they could not round up the staff for November 12. Plus, we were not sure how many bands would want to stretch their season.”
In coming to the decision to partner with Middletown South High School, the determining factors were:
-Group 3 bands that appear in Allentown November 5 for Nationals can now participate Saturday but at an earlier time.
-Group 1 A and 2 A bands, will be able to do a double header. First to Allentown and then to Middletown South on the way home --- and the times will work.
For band directors, we will be kicking back some small amounts of your fee and we will be in touch. We will also honor all tickets for Rowan at Middletown South High School. Ticket prices will stay the same. Once the USBands team executes this Saturdays’ events, which include monster events at Rutgers, in New Britain, CT and in Annapolis, the team will be reaching out director by director to settle all issues and answer all questions.
In 2011, USBands fought through a snowstorm on this every weekend and in 2012, Hurricane Sandy caused havoc in the band world all along the East Coast. In each case, with hard work and great cooperation with bands and their directors USBands was able to manage some fabulous events.
In line with the above, George Hopkins, CEO of Youth Education in the Arts, the parent organization of USBands, was filled with praise for the team. “Running so many large events is a challenge and now with the weather throwing a curveball the workload was just tremendous. The team did great work! The band directors have been understanding and accommodating. Things may not be as planned but the State Champs will still be an excellent event.”
Come out Saturday to any of our events, stay inside Sunday and we will see you next weekend at events far and wide as the marching season moves towards the year-ending National Championships.
The New York State Championships, also scheduled for October 29th, will be held this Saturday, October 28th. All information has been sent to the bands and we are underway and good to go.
