It was a rainy weekend across the East Coast, but all of the USBands competitions managed to miss the poor weather. With heavy rain expected on Sunday, both the New Jersey A Class State Championship and the New York State Championship were rescheduled, but all other events went on as planned. The New York State Championship was moved to a day earlier, Saturday night. The New Jersey A Class State Championship has been rescheduled for November 4. You can read more about the upcoming rescheduled event here.
"We're proud of our team for working so quickly to reschedule these events," said Jon Swengler, Associate Director of USBands. "Moving events around like this is not an easy task. Weather like that can make for a terrible experience for students and spectators alike, and we wanted to provide the best experience possible for everyone involved."
This was not the first time USBands has had to reschedule major events due to weather. In 2012 Hurricane Sandy blew into New Jersey and impacted a great number of USBands events, forcing cancellations and rescheduling. Last Sunday, originally the date for the New Jersey and New York State events, was the five year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy making landfall.
This weekend featured seven events including the New Jersey State Championship (Open, IV-VI A), Pennsylvania State Championship, New England States Championship, Marine Corps Invitational, New York State Championship, USBands Coppell Showcase and a show at Paint Branch High School. Looking ahead to the second to last week of the fall season, we're preparing for several Regional Championships, three REMO Series Finale events, and the A Class National Championships at J. Birney Crum Stadium in Allentown, PA. For many schools it will be the last weekend of competition for the 2017 season.
