Given the safety concerns due to the inclement weather conditions forecast with this weekend's coastal storm, USBands officials have determined it is in the best interests of the students, educators and parents to make changes to the 30th Anniversary schedule of State Championship events slated for this Saturday, Oct. 27 and Sunday, Oct. 28.

Jon Swengler, Director of USBands, said in making the announcement, “We have been watching the weather forecasts for the past several days and working in collaboration with our hosts and each of the participating bands to create the plans that will provide the best possible situation for participating students and all of our guests during the State Championship weekend.”

Swengler added, “While not all events will see changes, the New Jersey State Championships at Rutgers University and New England State Championships in New Britain will experience the most significant alterations in order to avoid the worst of the weather conditions.”

“We appreciate the dozens of individuals who have worked with us from facility managers to athletic directors, emergency and safety personnel and of course all of the band directors. We pride ourselves on being responsive to the needs of all of the bands, and while on occasion we have to make these schedule changes, it is always in the best interest of the young people to give them the most positive experience possible given the circumstances.”

“For many bands, this is their final performance of the year and for our senior students, this may be their final marching band performance ever. We want to do everything we can to make sure it is a positive memory they can keep with them,” concluded Swengler.

New Jersey State Group IVA , VA, VIA, & Open Class Championships
Rutgers University

Working with the officials at Rutgers University, it was determined based on the safety of all participants and spectators to move this event to Sunday. Unfortunately, due to a busy campus schedule, Rutgers is unable to host the event on Sunday, Oct. 28. Therefore on Sunday, Oct. 28 the Group IVA - I, III Open Championships will be relocated to Old Bridge High School in Matawan, NJ. The Group VA, VIA and II, IV, V, VI Open Class Championships will be held at South Brunswick High School in Monmouth Junction, NJ. Start times for these events will be announced shortly.

Veterans Memorial Stadium

Due to concerns with rescheduling on such a short timeline and challenges with a Sunday event, the New England State Championships will be moved to a mid-week schedule at the same Veterans Memorial Stadium in New Britain, CT.

The first event will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 30 from 4PM-10PM
The second event will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 31 from 4PM-10PM

Exact schedules per Group and Class are forthcoming.

Pennsylvania State Championships
West Chester University

In conjunction with Adam Gumble and the West Chester University Music and Athletic Departments, the decision was made to move the original start time of the PA State Championships to 5 pm from its original 3 pm start time. Forecasts call for the rain to end in the mid-afternoon time period, and while breezy, the strongest winds should calm slightly near sunset. Other than the start time, there will be no changes to the PA State Championships.

New Jersey State Group IA, IIA, IIIA State Championships at Rowan University and the New York State Championships both scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 28 will be held according to the original schedule and no changes are anticipated.

Stay tuned for more details including the exact schedules for all events to be released in the coming day.
