Meet the 2019 Brass Staff

IMG 1610The Cadets are thrilled to welcome the 2019 brass staff, headed by returning Caption Head Branden Hill. Also returning as the Brass Arranger and Brass Caption Supervisor, Dr. Drew Shanefield will continue in his integral role with the educational team.

Branden is a graduate of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX, where he received a master's in Instrumental Conducting. He received his bachelor's degree from Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN, where he studied instrumental music education and conducting. A native of Murfreesboro, TN, Branden has worked with high school programs across the United States as both a clinician and designer. He is an active judge across the US. Before graduate school, he was the Director of Bands at Kempner High School in Sugar Land, TX and the assistant band director in Waller ISD and Fort Bend ISD. This is his third season on staff with The Cadets.

Drew has spent his career in education as an instrumental music teacher in the Haverford Township School District in Pennsylvania. He is a former member of the music faculty at Swarthmore College. He is also the brass designer for Cadets2 and a Cadets alum. Previously, he has served in similar positions for the Cavaliers, Bluecoats, The Cadets, Carolina Crown and Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps.

The 2019 team includes professional performers, college professors, top-notch conductors, clinicians and teachers. Between them, they hold four doctoral degrees, 13 masters degrees and hundreds of seasons of drum corps experience to create an exciting mix of experienced and energized teachers. "We are educators first," said Branden Hill. "The staff has an incredible history of experience and success in the marching arts. We are focused on a world-class experience for every member. The new staff were chosen based on their skill set in brass performance. Each new staff member is an exceptional performer and educator."

So what can you expect from the team in 2019? Drew Shanefield said, "Tom Aungst, Adam Sage and I come from a time where The Cadets were known to push the limits of what was possible (creatively, physically, musically). I think we are all very excited to include elements of that "tradition" into the show design. A lot of responsibility will be placed on the performers to bring the program to life, perhaps more than recent programs. How far can we take it? I'm not sure. We are who we are, no reason to try and be something other than our authentic selves."

"We will be pushing the boundaries of what is possible in brass performance," Branden added. "You can expect the high-intensity performance and innovative design that we expect from The Cadets."
