The Cadets celebrated their final brass camp ahead of the 2019 season this past weekend in Salem, New Jersey. Once again our host Salem High School made our stay productive and memorable, as they have for the entire fall of 2018 and winter of 2019. We would like to thank the many staff and faculty members of Salem High School who helped provide for our members at these camps. A very special thanks goes out to the many volunteers, who not only cooked and drove shuttles for the weekend, but also completed work on the food trailer, equipment trailer, pickup truck, and box truck. Your help goes a long way to getting us ready for the summer season!

While many of our guard members and percussionists were competing in WGI, the brass section has been working together since January to prepare and piece together the summer production, learning the entirety of the show music. The preparation of the brass performers in between camps has been nothing short of outstanding.

Drew Shanefield, music coordinator and brass arranger has expressed how important these winter camps are for the brass of the corps by saying "We are so appreciative for the opportunity to host camps and rehearse at Salem High School. The Philly-based location, coupled with all the amenities one would need for drum corps' crucial winter season, makes it a great winter rehearsal home. We are looking forward to deepening our roots here at Salem High School." Branden Hill, Brass Caption Manager, joined Shanefield by adding "It has been an incredible experience being at Salem High School for our winter season. The hospitality from the community has been above and beyond what we could ever ask for from a housing site. It is a wonderful relationship that we look forward to building in the future."

This past weekend we presented two $500 educational scholarships to the music program at Salem High School. Nick Kline, who is a Holy Bass alumn from 1998 & 2000 and Director of Bands at Salem High School, said "As an alumn of The Cadets, the corps has played a role in the person I am today. To be in a position with a supportive school district where I can give back to the corps and help my own program build and grow is an amazing feeling." Principal John R. Mulhorn said "The Salem City School District has been both pleased and honored to have been the host school for The Cadets. This experience has been educational and inspirational to our school community. The scholarships that are being offered today represent more opportunities for our students. We thank the Cadets for their generosity and we look forward to a continuing partnership for years to come." Vicki Ferrence Ray, Executive Director of Youth Education in the Arts, presented the scholarship on Sunday of camp and said, "We are thrilled with the partnership with Salem High School and are glad to be able to thank the school and the community for welcoming us."

As we leave Salem High School we are excited to be going to Keith Valley Middle School for the April camp, where we will have the entire corps back together. Not only will the percussion section join the corps, but also the color guard will be finalizing their membership for the upcoming summer. We still have spots open in the color guard and it is not too late to register for April camp at join.cadets.org.

As we head into our final camp for the 2019 season, we invite all to attend our 'Show and Tell' at Keith Valley Middle School on Sunday, April 28 starting at 12 pm. The Cadets will perform excerpts from the 2019 program as well as several other pieces that have been rehearsed during the winter months. We look forward to seeing you as we prepare for the 2019 season!
