USBands Update: May 1

Created on Friday, 01 May 2020 13:42:01

USBands remains committed to providing an outstanding marching season for all participants.  Our ability to provide multiple scenarios for bands in 2020 - 2021 is the mainstay of our organization.  All of what we do will be based on the guidance of health professionals, state leadership, and individual school districts. With those things in mind, the timeline remains fluid.

As mentioned in our Director Connector session on April 8th, the USBands team wanted to provide a brief update on the status of the upcoming 2020 marching band season as of the beginning of May.

We are hoping to have guidance from state officials and local administrations by July 1st or August 1st at the very latest. This will allow us to proceed with the full schedule as planned, taking into consideration an expanded Performance Class.

USBands recently announced the Performance Class for bands in the 2020-2021 school year after receiving feedback from schools around the nation which have been impacted by lost fundraising, recruiting, rehearsal time, and potential band camp changes.

Additionally, the Performance Class will allow for music programs who do not choose to compete to participate in a more substantive experience and engaging evaluation platform rather than the current Festival Class. The USBands Performance Class will offer evaluation, commentary, and critique associated with traditional adjudication, however will not have an announced score or placement.

Potential Future Options

We are evaluating each of the several regions in which we operate for considerations for later or variable openings. The fall schedule may be adjusted as determined by the specific needs of a region or state. Based on conversations and input from directors, the team will be considering options that include (but are not limited to):

• Performance class only for several weeks

• Modified or shortened season

• Social distancing compliant events

• Potential Spring marching band season if football is postponed

• Flexible scheduling to address busing, travel concerns, and expenses

It is USBands’ intention to provide the best possible experience for the music programs and all of the students involved based on any number of scenarios.  In making sure participants are kept safe and healthy in compliance with all applicable regulations, the USBands “Can do, Will do” spirit will allow for us to join together in music and pageantry as performed by these magnificent young people we all miss so much.

Additional details and updates will be provided as we adjust our season following the guidance of local, state, and national officials. Please stay tuned to the usbands.org website, our Facebook page, and the BAND mobile app, along with these periodic communications for future updates.

A reminder also to join us for the Director Connector Series of interactive webinars and sessions every week to connect with the USBands Team and your peers and colleagues. For the next several weeks we will be featuring engaging conversations directly with Visual and Effect judges as you plan for your future participation in USBands.

As always, feel free to contact USBands anytime at marching@usbands.org with questions, concerns, or ideas on your program’s participation in USBands activities.
