In a long-awaited move, Winter Guard International (WGI) and USBands have finally teamed up as circuit partners for winter color guard and percussion. While discussions and rumors circulated about the potential partnership during the fall season, the partnership was made official on November 28th.
"We're really excited about coming together with WGI," said Interim USBands Director, Jon Swengler, "It's a great opportunity and we believe that this will provide a more national outlook for the students who compete with us. This will be beneficial for all of our students and we can't wait to incorporate our program with the WGI platform."
USBands will be entering it's 29th fall season in 2017, but this year marks just the seventh in existence for the winter circuit. This also marks the beginning of the USBands switch to WGI adjudication sheets. This, combined wiht the addition of visual performance sheets in percussion in 2015, will provide ensembles with a comparable adjudication system to what they will encounter in WGI events. The switch is significant and will not only give ensembles a more even read from circuit to circuit, but will open the door for more ensembles to participate in more events each week.
Currently, USBands is working to fill it's modified 2017 winter schedule. Catasauqua High School, located in Northampton, Pa., just 20 minutes north of the YEA! offices in Allentown, will host their first-ever USBands Indoor event on February 18 to kick off the season.
